THE VIENNA TRIALS

Milo Rau has already staged show trials in Moscow and Zurich; now the city of Vienna and with it the Free Republic of Vienna proclaimed by the Wiener Festwochen will also have their own trials.

A mixture of hard realism and social sculpture, Milo Rau’s trial formats (The Zurich Trials, The Moscow Trials, The Congo Tribunal) are an exercise in democratic methods and yet stage events: performances that are arranged as legal trials place real figures of contemporary life on stage. Politics are negotiated without a pre-ordained outcome. The Vienna Trials will take place on three weekends at the Free Republic of Vienna.

Box of Truth
Every Vienna Trial weekend starts with two public figures being attached to the lie detector in the Box of Truth, a glass container in front of Vienna’s MuseumsQuartier. During these public hearings, actor Bibiana Beglau examines moral and political constellations that lie behind the scandals of the Vienna Trials. The Box of Truth becomes a place of political contradictions and ethical dilemmas.

Each trial weekend will start on the Friday at 5pm outside Vienna’s MuseumsQuartier. The proceedings will always begin with two persons from public life being attached to the lie detector in the Box of Truth and publicly interrogated by actor Bibiana Beglau. At 7.30pm, the proceedings will continue at Odeon with the opening hearing for that weekend’s trial, which continue with three cases featuring real protagonists over the course of the Saturday and Sunday. The judgement will in each instance be announced on the Sunday evening. The sentences will be proclaimed at 1pm on 23 June at the House of the Republic.
