THE VIENNA TRIALS

After staging show trials in Moscow and Zurich; the city of Vienna and with it the Free Republic of Vienna proclaimed by the Wiener Festwochen also had their own trials, directed by Milo Rau.

A mixture of hard realism and social sculpture, Rau’s trial formats (The Zurich Trials, The Moscow Trials, The Congo Tribunal) are an exercise in democratic methods and yet stage events: performances that are arranged as legal trials place real figures of contemporary life on stage. Politics are negotiated without a pre-ordained outcome.
