After Mary has been released from jail, she is reunited with her sister Martha, who runs a shelter for people in need, which survives on donations and small miracles. The community also shields a group of activists led by a man named Jesus who fights for greater equality and justice. Soon, the walls of the shelter crumble. Mary and Martha are roughly pulled out into a world where violence, brutality and injustice prevail. Their resilience is challenged. How can they keep faith in a better future while everything around them harshly contradicts their hopes? Focusing on the marginalised perspectives of Mary Magdalene and Martha, The Gospel According to the Other Mary casts a political and contemporary look at biblical characters and events, including the resurrection of Lazarus and the passion of Christ.
