Luana Oliveira and Devanir Olivera de Araújo will provide insights into the political, ecological and cultural outlook of the Landless Worker’s Movement MST in their conversation with Milo Rau, who already worked closely with the movement for his project Antigone in the Amazon. Known across the globe as a movement of resistance by the rural population, agricultural workers and smallholder families, MST employ a policy of occupation in their struggle against large landowners and strive for comprehensive land reform. Further core demands include ecological measures to protect natural resources as well as the autonomy of the indigenous population in reparation for a historical, colonial debt. MST’s resistance is practised by way of acampamentos (occupation/squatting) and assentamentos (legalised settlement). In view of the Free Republic of Vienna, they will also address the question of how art and activism are related within the movement together with Milo Rau.
