Artistic practices blend with activist and socio-political issues at the House of the Republic. SIGNA are the first of the Free Republic of Vienna's series of in-house artists: from 2025 onwards, there will be an artistic focus associated with the House of the Republic every year.
The immersive performances by the Austrian-Danish collective SIGNA are legendary. The performance The Final Year was created especially for the House of the Republic; emerging out of an on-site rehearsal process of several months. Persons of every nationality, appearance, age as well as all kinds of professional backgrounds were invited to apply as performers. They develop the performance together with experienced SIGNA participants in Vienna. The theatrical worlds of SIGNA are finessed down to the last detail, as revealed in the day-time exhibition.
EXHIBITION SIGNA
SIGNA have entirely reshaped the notion of site-specific theatre. Their performances are mostly created in empty buildings or on derelict sites that are more than a stage for SIGNA. They join hands with an ensemble of international co-performers to create a comprehensive world that the audience can experience and explore. In addition to the immersive performance The Final Year, the exhibition on the ground floor of the House of the Republic reveals the unique Danish-Austrian performance collective's very own style and artistic works of what is probably our times’ most innovative theatre and performance group in Europe seen through the lense of photographer Erich Goldmann.
