Borda, the new piece by Lia Rodrigues, is a celebration of the imagination beyond all limits. It was created at a centre for art and education that the Brazilian choreographer has been running for over 20 years in one of the largest favelas of Rio de Janeiro.
For the 35th anniversary of Lia Rodrigues' Companhia de Danças, the Brazilian choreographer is opening up her case of fabrics with which she has travelled the theatres of the world. Together with a new generation of dancers and the Centro de Artes da Maré, the centre for art and education that Rodrigues has been running in one of the largest favelas of Rio de Janeiro, she is now showing Borda.'Borda' in Portuguese refers to embroidery, decoration, but also to a border, something that separates. Borders create contradictions: hospitality and hostility, native and non-native. Who belongs and who is excluded, who has a right to exist? Metaphorically, the word 'borda' also means imagination, the ability to cross borders. And that is Borda: a celebration of the imagination, an embroidery of otherness. Starting from the energy of the collective and using simple materials like textiles and plastic, Rodrigues creates a unique world of images. With great care that which has been separated is brought back together.
