The traditional opening of the Wiener Festwochen becomes the Proclamation of the Free Republic of Vienna in the first festival edition under artistic director Milo Rau. Fuzzman & The Singin’ Rebels will take us through the spectacular evening together with musician accomplices Pussy Riot, Bipolar Feminin, Voodoo Jürgens & Die Ansa Panier, Gustav, Paula Carolina and Monobrother. Projections of striking imagery will cast Vienna’s city hall into a new light. Prominent activists and artists including Nobel laureate for literature Elfriede Jelinek, ecologist Carola Rackete, alter ego character KDM Königin der Macht, Hip Hop musician Kid Pex, author and actor Mateja Meded, author Kim de l’Horizon, director Stas Zhyrkov and author Sibylle Berg will add their poignant statements. The celebrations will culminate when Herwig Zamernik alias Fuzzman, the Free Republic Choir Vienna as well as members of the Council of the Republic sing the new anthem ‘Steht auf steht auf’ (Rise Up Rise Up) on Rathausplatz. Milo Rau is calling on us to ‘reclaim the brilliance of life!’
On 17 May, Vienna will thus become a place where a humane, post-capitalist future is debated and artists, intellectuals and democratic freedom movements from throughout the world come together in order to exchange insights. Five weeks until 23 June will be full of revolutionary energy, artistic projects, debates and celebration: Wiener Festwochen, the largest crossover festival in Europe, will be the Free Republic of Vienna!
