What if reality were just the sum total of subjective facts and individual fictions? Tanya Beyeler and Pablo Gisbert, who began their successful collaboration as El Conde de Torrefiel in 2010 and caused a sensation at the Wiener Festwochen in 2018 with La Plaza, consider that the notion of a single shared reality is completely outdated. With a world that is no longer tangible as their starting point, in Una imagen interior (An Image from the inside) they take the audience along on a journey into a body, its mind and the deepest recesses of the imagination. Where does this escape from the outside world – and therefore the images and fictions that control us – actually lead? A moment equivalent to the blink of an eye unfolds as a 90-minute poetic introspection, at the end of which the return to the physical materiality of the world is completed. El Conde de Torrefiel have ventured once again to play reality and imagination, naturalness and artificiality, the individual and the collective off against each other in their unconventional composition of minimalist choreography, alluring images and particularly pithy narration. Merciless is the close-up look at a present that shatters into fragments. And vital for survival is the training of our imagination for the uncertainties of the future.
