Artistic Director Milo Rau: "Vienna, Austria and Europe have lost one of their most outspoken citizens: we mourn the passing of Alfred Noll, a critical friend of the Free Republic of Vienna, a member of the Supervisory Board of the Vienna Festival, a humanist, a free spirit, a lawyer, a bulwark against the far right, an infinitely well-read author, a shrewd politician, an expert on Montesquieu and Hobbes, and, last but not least, the prosecutor in the Vienna Trials (2024). Alfred, there will not be another like you in this world any time soon – we shall meet again in the next! And we shall never forget you!"
Alfred J. Noll had been a member of the Supervisory Board of the Vienna Festival since September 2025. Chair of the Supervisory Board Gundi Wentner emphasises: "We are grateful for the critical and inspiring manner, in the best sense of the word, with which Alfred Noll carried out his duties on the Supervisory Board. Our deepest sympathy in this difficult hour goes to his family and friends."
