Buhle Ngaba is a 2022 Festwochen Visiting Artist.

A double exposure: the woman is the swan. She relates anecdotes of past bathing rituals, of love dances, of wings being clipped. In Buhle Ngaba’s solo piece, realities become blurred. An incurable disease, medical terminology and intimate recollections are the integral elements of a coming-of-age story of someone who does not fit the bill. Is the swan woman with the protruding shoulder blades the ugly duckling among human beings? The monologue shaped by South African references and Setswana expressions unfailingly casts its spell. In Swan Song, created as part of an exploration of characters from Shakespearian plays and forms of stand-up comedy, the politically engaged actress and up-and-coming writer Buhle Ngaba conjures up an atmosphere between theatrical beauty and disarming directness in a piece now on show outside South Africa for the first time. The swan song is the beautiful final song that precedes death; here it becomes an emancipatory appropriation of one’s own history. In its search for life, love and freedom, the swan loses its feathers. Yet still it flies high.
