The American tech billionaire and doomsday prophet Peter Thiel and the left-wing theologian Wolfgang Palaver have been invited by the Vienna Festival | Free Republic of Vienna to a public debate on the topic “Armageddon and Antichrist? From Theology to Realpolitik”.
In this year’s festival edition, REPUBLIC OF GODS, a wide range of events will examine the links between religion, tech capitalism and realpolitik. The left-wing theologian Wolfgang Palaver represents Catholic Social Teaching and calls for a “world authority with effective means”. Peter Thiel is considered a political string-puller who prefers to act out of the public eye. His lectures on the Antichrist have taken place worldwide behind closed doors.
A public event featuring Peter Thiel and Wolfgang Palaver is planned for the first time on 7 June at 8 p.m. at the InterContinental Hotel, moderated by Milo Rau. Three professional responses are planned in reaction to the debate, after which the floor will be opened for questions from the audience. Both participants have confirmed their attendance.
Advance media reports have already circulated and prompted critical responses. In accordance with the democratic constitution of the Free Republic of Vienna and the procedures it has established through the “Vienna Declaration” cancellation protocol, a Republic’s Debate will therefore be held. At this event, the reasons for inviting Palaver and Thiel will be discussed publicly and all viewpoints will be heard.
The Republic’s Debate will take place on Friday, 29 May, at 4pm at Theatre Odeon. Following this open debate, the Vienna Festival will decide on Saturday, 30 May, whether the event can proceed as planned.
Milo Rau, Artistic Director of the Vienna Festival, Sara Abbasi, head dramaturge, and Wolfgang Palaver, theologian, will address questions from the public. Political scientist Monika Mokre will be present representing the Council of the Republic. The press and the public are invited.
