In the play by author Özen Yula, six characters take turns sitting on a park bench in Istanbul, engaging in a dialogue. Absorbed by the vastness of the city, they have prostituted themselves and now live within a system of dependencies, wondering about the possibility of relationships that are not determined by money. The merry dance of scenes intensifies the pressure. How can you ever hope to be free when life itself is never really yours? Melis Tezkan and Okan Urun, who collaborate under the name biriken, created one of the first stage productions of the text originally published in 2002. For Vienna, the directing duo is a discovery. The concentrated staging contrasts the impact of the content with the minimalism of the setting. Indeed, just a few objects and two projection surfaces suffice to propel these remarkable actors into a cycle of crime and taboo. Is Sahibinden Kiralık (For Rent) not only the description of a clandestine subculture, but also a metaphor for life in Turkey?
