The video installation Sacred Tears connects old Egyptian mythology with the urban space and imagines the Badeschiff as the body of a new deity. In doing so, Reza Shirvan questions fundamental dualisms such as East and West, female and male, left and right as well as the eyes of Ra and Horus. Instead of appearing as stable opposites, these juxtapositions reveal themselves to be fragile constructions that can be shifted, overlap and be dissolved. Documentary images of the visitors’ eyes replace the eyes of Ra and Horus to engender a collective figure between myth and reality. All those who enter themselves become a part of this new deity: a collective body that combines individual gazes, experiences and memories to flow into the Danube in the shape of tears in a mutual catharsis. These tears embody vulnerability and memory; they flow sacredly like the run of the Danube that flows from Germany to Ukraine and unites pain, myth and hope in this liquid collective.
