Bouchra Ouizguen Corbeaux

Women dressed all in black, white scarves wrapped around their heads. In something resembling an ancient ritual, they form a group, throw their heads backwards and forwards, and emit harsh, almost animalistic cries. Bouchra Ouizguen, a pioneer of contemporary Moroccan dance, created Corbeaux (Crows) for the Marrakech Biennale in 2014. Together with her Compagnie O’s ensemble and local performers, she has already produced several versions of it in various cities. Finally this hypnotic performance is coming to Vienna. Women of all ages in a seemingly trance-like state use dance to evoke countless associations: creation and exhaustion, beauty and danger, nomads and birds, the power of womanhood and its oppression in many societies. Above all, however, Corbeaux reminds us of such an essential thing as community. An experience that won’t leave anyone cold.
