Panis Mater

Permanent kitchen installation and bread-making workshop

Sophia Festini Sughi, Marietheres Reichegger, David Spanier

Wednesday to Sunday

‘I am the universal mother, mistress of all foods.
Though I am worshipped and eaten in many aspects, known by countless forms,
propitiated with all manner of different shapes, yet the round one is my favourite.’

‘Open your hands for a piece of her.’
‘Break it, spread it, share it.’

Panis Mater describes an abstracted bakery built of Ytong blocks on the Danube Canal embankment. It recalls a sacred site and invites people to join the adoration of Panis Mater. Together, we knead the dough, bake the loaf of the Bread Mother and thus become a part of her.
