Nesterval
Biography
Nesterval, the immersive theatre ensemble founded in 2011 by Martin Finnland and Teresa Löfberg, sees itself as a queer folk theatre that translates, exaggerates and deconstructs classics from literary, cinematic and theatrical history into the present day. At the heart of each production is the joy of performance, the creation of a theatrical space for experience, the involvement of the audience through interaction, and the establishment of a political dimension through which socio-political issues are raised and negotiated.
Their plays are always based on epochal experiences of the fictional Nesterval family dynasty. More than 30 productions shown in Austria and internationally are site-specific and refer to the cultural, social and historical background of the respective venue.
Nesterval has already been nominated three times for the Nestroy Theatre Prize, most recently in 2023 for Die Namenlosen, a work that deals with the persecution of queer people under the Nazi regime. In 2025, the group realised the operetta adaptation Fürst*in Ninetta und Nestervals Götterdämmerung at Neue Staatsoper.
With Wallden, Nesterval can be seen for the first time this year as part of the Vienna Festival (Wiener Festwochen) | Freie Republik Wien.
