Mattias Andersson

Biography

Mattias Andersson is a director, author, and, since 2020, the artistic director of the Dramaten (the Royal Dramatic Theatre) in Stockholm. Between 2006 and 2019 he was Artistic Director of Backa Theater Gothenburg.

Andersson’s plays are typically based on extensive research and personal interviews, exploring the tension between power and morality. With his socially critical and documentary theatre formats, he is a regular guest on major stages in Sweden, Norway, and Germany, as well as at international festivals.

In 2006, he staged The Mental States of Gothenburg and later, in 2013, The Mental States of Sweden, bringing stories from Swedish citizens to the stage. Invited by the Vienna Festival (Wiener Festwochen) | Free Republic of Vienna and Volkstheater Wien, he is now creating Myths of Everyday Life, which portrays small and large moments from the lives of the people of Vienna – marking his first production in Austria.

Andersson has received several prestigious awards including the Swedish Ibsen Prize and Swedish Theatre Critics' Award. He has been nominated for the Nordic Playwrights Prize and Premio Europa per il Teatro. In 2023 his performance We who got to relive our lives was invited to the Venice Biennale in Italy and 2025 his personal adaptation of Hamlet at Dramaten was named best performance of the year in Sweden.
