MAHKU
Biography
MAHKU is the collective of Huni Kuin artists from the Rio Jordão region in Acre, Brazil. The group was founded in 2010–2011 on the initiative of Ibã Sales Huni Kuin—cacique, leader, and txaná (chant leader) of the Huni Meka songs. What distinguishes their work is the spiritual exploration of the Huni Meka chants and their collective translation into large-scale paintings and a multimedia language. MAHKU builds bridges between older and younger generations of the Huni Kuin and brings their art into the heart of the contemporary art scene. The group’s motto: “I sell canvas, I buy land.”
