For prisoners and travellers alike, writing messages holds the promise of contact with the world, a lifting of their isolation. This was the case for Sam Melville, an inmate of the Attica maximum security correctional facility. Melville had planted bombs in several government buildings in New York in protest against the Vietnam War and was killed in 1971 during the angry riots in protest at the inhumane conditions at the prison. For Letters from Attica, Begüm Erciyas, as someone who, in her artistic works, likes to challenge the audience’s engagement, has chosen to piece together fragments of Melville’s prison letters, creating a social installation within the public space. Sharing their content, embodying the words, and bridging the distance becomes a responsible task for all involved. ‘We owe it to ourselves and to each other to dedicate ourselves to the construction of a society that will serve the needs of the people.’ Allowing the letters to reach their destinations is a shared attempt that makes an accomplice of every audience.
