Waviness Acts Of God

Video

Julius Lungmayer

At its core, ‘Waviness Acts of God’ addresses the way we perceive our world and the human tendency to order phenomena as connected and by their effect on our lives in our desire to understand.

The video work is based on an installation that comprises an inflatable column of transparent plastic filled with mist; patterns based on movements in the ship’s environment are continuously projected into the mist by a laser projector mounted inside the plinth. The movements might be those on the surface of the water or those of faces. It is not immediately apparent by which means – laser scanner or other technologies – these movements are captured and processed.

It is an illustration to question the way we perceive processes that seem not to be immediately influenced by humans: apparent phenomena of nature, ‘natural events’. They have a dimension that is not controlled by humans, which makes them more akin to what is mythologically and conceptually called an ‘Act of God’ than to individual human availability and accountability.
