HOUSE OF THE REPUBLIC

in collaboration with the Aktivism Camp of Klima Biennale Wien and before it gets better... by Volkskundemuseum Wien.

Ever since Antiquity, the republic has stood for (political) freedom, common welfare and the right to have a say. A dedicated House of the Republic will therefore open its doors, halls, courts, cafés and stairwells during the months of May and June. Local and international activist initiatives, students and the Free Republic team will move their workplaces to these lively headquarters of the Free Republic of Vienna at Volkskundemuseum. Prevalent attitudes, institutional processes and ingrained norms will be questioned with regard to a potential future, creating in the process a place for joyously controversial discussion and practical examination. What do we need for a successful future of climate justice and solidarity.

HEARINGS

Tuesdays and Wednesdays are hearing days – a series in which we will develop the rules for the festival of the future together. Who takes decisions? Where does project funding come from and where does it go? Who is invited and who isn’t – and why? Who is the producer, who is the audience? Boycotts – yes or no? And: how does a globally active festival agree with sustainability? Experts, artists and activists provide an insight into their practices and examine potential alternatives. Over the duration of five weeks, the Council of the Republic will attend and discuss the hearings and design the Festwochen’s own constitution, which will be presented to the audience at the end of the festival as the Vienna Declaration.

ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS VIENNA
Guided tours with the scenography class

23 scenographers from the scenography class under the direction of Nina von Mechow spent two semesters developing the central spaces of the Free Republic of Vienna. Confronting historical models, they wondered: how does utopia manifest itself? What emerged are spaces that issue an invitation to take on unexpected perspectives, to try out alternative forms of community, to instigate a dialogue between the preliminaries and the unwritten future of the Free Republic of Vienna. Spaces to think and work, to eat and dance, spaces that are not static, but mutate over the course of the five weeks. To make this possible, the artists will operate an open workshop in the House of the Republic. Every second week, the Academy of Fine Arts scenographers will invite the audience on a tour of discovery of the house and to cast a look behind the facade.

Who better to tread in the footsteps of Eugène Delacroix than the ‘muralist’ Victoria Lomasko? Her visual accounts and critical chronicles of the Putin regime predestine her to be the painter of the revolution at the Free Republic of Vienna. As a dissident, she has been in West European exile since the Russian invasion of Ukraine; Lomasko will spend two weeks creating a large mural at the House of the Republic. La liberté guidant le peuple (Liberty Leading the People) was Delacroix’s take on the July Revolution 1830. What are the forces to unite the citizens of the Free Republic?
