Composer and theatre maker Heiner Goebbels is back in Vienna, for the first time in more than ten years. Everything that happened and would happen is a ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’, a total artwork that retraces the last 100 years of European history. It is a perennial recurrence of destruction, a cycle of collapse. Inspired by Patrik Ouředník’s book Europeana. A Brief History of the Twentieth Century, it is not about facts and causalities, but a succession, juxtaposition and coalescing of events and commentaries. Musical improvisations respond to large gloomy images. Daily news broadcasts project the present onto recycled stage set elements. Objects are turned into an impressive scenery, become ruins, and are the evening’s protagonists. A world emerges in which people are not the focal point. Goebbels ventures a glimpse into the future. And in that future, humankind is history.
