  • MITTEN

Dance without dance with Moroccan choreographer Bouchra Ouizguen. As part of MITTEN.

Éléphant represents a continuation of my earlier works. It is also a beginning, something similar to hope when all that surrounds us risks disappearing. I search for all the things that need to be passed on, the things that tell the story of humankind.’ Bouchra Ouizguen, the pioneering trailblazer of Moroccan contemporary dance, guested at the Wiener Festwochen in 2019 with her mesmerising piece Corbeaux. For her new production she is experimenting once again with the female artists of her Compagnie O, based on a shared wealth of experience, traditional singing techniques and the popular repertoire of the Marrakesh region. The unexpected intensity of the voices is stunning. A women’s choir forms in the darkness, becomes a collective body, and oscillates between strength and fragility. A tragedy draws closer to the audience, yet glimmers of hope and joy shine through. Éléphant searches for timeless, archaic rituals and encounters a dance that fills the present with new life.
