Cinema of the Republic

Come on a special journey through the past decades on film on the occasion of the 75 year anniversary of the Vienna Festival (Wiener Festwochen)! Every Friday and Sunday, the Cinema of the Republic in the Badeschiff cargo bay shows selected film excerpts, archival footage and documentary material about iconic productions that have shaped the myth of the Vienna Festival, such as Protecting Yourself from the Future (Christoph Marthaler), Us Dogs (Signa), Please Love Austria (Christoph Schlingensief) and Falco’s 1985 opening concert. Some screenings include conversations with participants, contemporaries and experts: a living archive of artistic diversity and influential moments from 75 years of the Vienna Festival (Wiener Festwochen)!

  • 24.5. – GIRLS & GODS + Talk

For the first event, the Cinema of the Republic is handing over the stage to its partners at Stadtkino and Inna Shevchenko. Here’s what’s in store for you:

GIRLS & GODS followed by a discussion with protagonist and activist Inna Shevchenko
In cooperation with the Vienna Festival as part of the film series: Thank Goddess!

Can feminism and religion coexist? Girls & Gods is a fearless journey, led by Inna Shevchenko, the author and initiator of the project, to answer precisely this question. Shevchenko, who once became known as the leader of FEMEN’s topless protests against patriarchal power structures, has now swapped protest for dialogue by inviting priestesses, imams, rabbis, theologians and other activists to open discussions.
