Alice Ripoll / Cia REC
Born in Rio de Janeiro, Alice Ripoll is a Brazilian choreographer and director of the ensembles Cia REC and SUAVE. Her interest in the expressive possibilities of the body and in movement research motivated her to study dance. She graduated from the school of Angel Vianna, an important centre for dance and motor rehabilitation. Her work has been shown both in Brazil and internationally. In 2007, working for an NGO, Alice Ripoll began to teach dance to 18-year-old favela denizens of Rio de Janeiro. The young men began to show interest in contemporary dance and decided to continue even without support. Alice Ripoll showed the work they had thus developed to a curator of Rio de Janeiro’s Panorama Festival, who decided to make it part of the festival programme. This success marked the beginning of a series of independent productions; today, the group has become a fixed element of the Brazilian contemporary dance scene. So far, Alice Ripoll and dancers Alan Ferreira, Leandro Coala, Tony Hewerton, Luiz L.A. and Romulo Galvão have developed five pieces; aCORdo was shown at Wiener Festwochen 2019.
