In his text Dying Like A Country, which was published in Athens in 1978, Dimitris Dimitriadis described the inner life of a collective, a sort of inner biography of his country. He portrayed a country annihilating itself in a hopeless war and state of siege, a country whose women have stopped bearing children, that says goodbye to what it was before. As a country of the past, it is partly stuck in the era of the Second World War, of occupation, civil war and the post-war period, and partly in a future where all shreds of its identity have been lost. As the country of a biography, it is located inside its inhabitants.
The text is a diagnosis of the Greek present, the analysis of a broken identity. In the perception of its inhabitants, the country has ceased to exist, destroying their existence in the process. “The name of the country has changed. The new country resembles the old one in nothing at all”, a protagonist remarks. But the language is indestructible, a complex language that has survived all occupations and attempts at colonialisation.
Athens-based director Michael Marmarinos has created a queue composed of 120 persons from Athens including 12 performers. This line of people will carry the text through the audience and across the stage: “A static procession of humans that has sprung from the oldest texts of the Old Testament and continues, endlessly, to the present and far into the future.”
