With the release of her new long-play album Take Me Apart, the American musician Kelela has earned herself a secure place among the most brilliant representatives of a new generation of verbally eloquent pop divas. In her songs, public statements, and interviews, this singer with Ethiopian roots highlights her position as a black, queer, and – not unimportantly - female musician in a music business that’s still influenced by hierarchic and patriarchal structures. Kelela’s sound hails from pop and the electronic underground, and since her very first mixtape Cut 4 Me, which received high praise from colleagues including Björk and Solange Knowles, producers such as Jam City and Nguzunguzu have been providing her with futuristic post-R&B instrumentals. In Take Me Apart, these have been elevated to a whole new level by figures including star producer Arca.
