Ever since their debut together as FAKA at the BubblegumClubbb Nights of Johannesburg’s Hazard Gallery, the artist duo Fela Gucci and Desire Marea have numbered among the most important protagonists of the South African arts scene. FAKA work in myriad forms of artistic expression, where public discussions, performances, videos, and photography enjoy a status equal to that of music production and live appearances. Consistently central to their work is the question as to the role and position of the queer, black body within a society shaped by heterosexual paradigms. FAKA’s tracks effect intelligent, subversive variations of existing musical codes, like in the way they play with South African gqom. Borrowing from this style, which is influenced by Western house music, FAKA describe their popular music video From a Distance as a »gqom-gospel lamentation for dick«. Late 2017 saw the release of Amaqhawe (the follow-up to their widely noted debut EP Bottoms Revenge) on NON.
