The inauguration of Wiener Festwochen 2014 is scheduled for 9 May, Europe Day. The best choirs from eight countries will send a deep-felt European message with a joint concert that also boasts the participation of the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Arnold Schoenberg Choir. Top choirs from Germany, France, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Croatia and Bulgaria will share the stage with Austrian colleagues. This year, the initiative “Austria Sings” – already so successful in 2011 – will embrace all of Europe. As with “Austria Sings” in 2011, a national choral competition is to be held prior to the event; the winner will represent Austria at the inauguration ceremony.
The event programme will inter alia feature highlights of classical and modern choral literature, interpreted jointly by the choirs in Vienna’s City Hall Square. Musical accompaniment will be provided by the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Cornelius Meister and by the Arnold Schoenberg Choir with its Artistic Director Erwin Ortner. Cornelius Obonya and Alice Tumler will host the evening as moderators.
Live broadcast via ORF 2 and 3sat, live stream via ORF TVthek ORF 2 and 3sat will transmit a live broadcast of “Europe sings – Inauguration Ceremony of Wiener Festwochen” on Friday, 9 May 2014, 9.20 p.m., while ORF III will televise a recording on Sunday, 11 May, at 9.15 p.m. The live broadcast will also be available as a live stream and – after the recorded broadcast – as video on demand, both from ORF TVthek.
